Friends for Youth Initiative is a school-based mentoring
partnership that began in 1999 as a partnership among Waterford
Youth Services Bureau, Waterford Public Schools, and Millstone
Power Station.
Mentors meet for one hour per week during the student's lunch
and recess, or directly after school. Meetings take place only
when school is in session.
Interested adults fill out an application, participate in a
personal interview, give permission for a background check, and
attend orientation training.
Mentors may choose to tutor a high-school student, walk and talk
around school grounds, eat and play a game, or do a craft during
lunchtime.
Matches are based on interest - so share your area of interest
with a young person today!
Research shows that one of the most important factors in helping
youth remain drug and alcohol free is the presence of a
meaningful relationship with a caring adult.
In
supporting today's busy families, Waterford Youth Services
Bureau offers many programs that provide additional supportive
relationships for the youth of our community.
Many
of these activities take place during the after school hours,
when research shows teen involvement in risky behaviors
increases 300%.
Mentoring is just one of the options. Sign up today!
